LG Selects AuthenTec Sensors for its First Biometric Notebook PC
MELBOURNE, Florida, March 30, 2006 -- LG Electronics, Inc. -- the global electronics leader that pioneered the use of biometrics in mobile phones in Korea -- has launched its first biometric notebook computers using advanced fingerprint sensors from AuthenTec, the world leader in fingerprint sensor security, innovation and sales.
LG has selected AuthenTec's EntréPad 2501A sensor for its M1, P1, S1 and T1 Express Dual models, which are designed for the commercial and consumer markets worldwide, primarily in Asia and Europe. The EntréPad sensor supports LG's total security solution for its new line of notebook computers.
AuthenTec's EntréPad 2501A fingerprint sensor replaces the need for passwords -- allowing authorized users to easily and quickly access their favorite computer files or internet web sites by simply sliding their finger across the sensor surface. At the same time, the EntréPad sensor restricts access to the computer and its files to only those enrolled -- reducing the risk of theft or fraud.
LG also has used AuthenTec's EntréPad 2510 fingerprint sensor to add security and convenience to three biometric cell phones, including its latest model, the LG-LP3550, available in Korea. The multi-function phone uniquely positions the AuthenTec sensor directly below the display to provide single-handed control. With the simple swipe of a finger, the sensor replaces passwords and authenticates the phone's user -- protecting buddy lists and stored photos, and providing additional security for mobile banking services that are gaining popularity in Korea and worldwide.
"We are especially proud that LG has selected AuthenTec for both its biometric cell phones and notebook computers," said Tom Aebli, director of PC segment marketing for AuthenTec. "LG's expanding use of biometrics reaffirms the growing need for the advanced security and added convenience that fingerprint sensors provide."
"We continue to recognize AuthenTec as the leader in providing best-of-breed solutions for fingerprint biometrics," said Y.K. Cho, vice president of IT Marketing for LG Electronics. "By collaborating with AuthenTec, LG has been able to accelerate our product and technology leadership, introducing first-of-its-kind products."
The EntréPad 2501A chosen by LG is the most proven slide sensor for PCs available today. The sensor uses AuthenTec's award winning TruePrint technology, the only sub-surface based solution on the market today.
With more than 8 million sensors in use worldwide, AuthenTec is the recognized number one supplier worldwide -- shipping nearly two thirds of all sensors sold in the PC, wireless and access control markets during the past five years. The company's sensors are used in more than 100 different notebook and tablet computers, portable hard drives, mice, keyboards, memory keys, cell phones and other devices.
